Abstract

The concept of tissue perfusion has a great relevance in the Extracorporeal Circulation procedure because its ineffectiveness can bring to the patient adverse events at the pump outlet and in the postoperative period. The perfusion systems currently, thanks to their biocompatible coatings, help to reduce the incidence of the appearance of the Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome in its early phase, having that less controlled on the late phase, all the above related with the endotoxaemia and the ischemia/reperfusion damage. It must be borne in mind that during the procedure, the perfusionist can easily act to minimize that late inflammatory response and its effects with three tools: flow, hemoglobin and the inspired fraction of oxygen.
