Abstract

Extracorporeal circulation is used in cardiovascular surgery to maintain systemic perfusion and oxygenation during repair. The period of hypoperfusion that accompanies cardiac surgery and the use of hypothermia reduce metabolic activity, generating adverse effects on the metabolic and functional recovery of the heart, as a result of the reduction in mitochondrial respiration, decreasing the production of high-energy phosphates. This period is accompanied by anaerobic metabolism that leads to the appearance of acidosis and increased lactate levels.
