The Latin American Perfusion Association (ALAP) ALAP paid tribute to the Brazilian perfusionist Antônio Gilberto Martins during the Perfusion Update Symposium, held in São Paulo, on December 9 and 10, 2022.
It should be noted that the first heart transplant performed in the world occurred in South Africa on December 9, 1967, coordinated by Dr. Christiaan Barnard.
Five months after this historic event, at dawn on May 26, 1968, Mr. Gilberto was called urgently to his home to perform the perfusion of our first transplant.
