Use of ECMO in lung transplantation
Keywords:
Pulmonary hypertension, lung transplantation, ECMO, extracorporeal membrane oxygenationAbstract
The first description of pulmonary arterial hypertension was made by Dr. Ernst von Romberg in 1891. The walls of the smallest vessels and capillaries swell become an obstacle to the normal oxygen and carbon dioxide transfer between the blood and the alveoli. Lung transplantation is a well established surgery for patients suffering from terminal lung disease, with relatively low morbidity and perioperative mortality. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is being widely used as a hemodynamic support during lung transplantation. ECMO maintains the stability of vital signs during surgery and prevents hemodynamic compromise due to single (selective) pulmonary ventilation, pulmonary artery compression and manipulation of the heart.
