Abstract

Denton Arthur Cooley was an American cardiovascular surgeon who pioneered the first total artificial heart implantation in 1969. This surgery launched Cooley to worldwide fame and recognition; his contributions to cardiovascular surgery were immense and encompassed all areas, both in adults and children.
