Abstract

The development of ECMO—an extracorporeal life support modality designed to temporarily replace lung and/or heart function—is one of the most significant milestones in modern intensive care medicine. Although its technical origins can be traced back to advances in cardiopulmonary perfusion in the mid-20th century (led by Dr. John Gibbon), it was Dr. Robert H. Bartlett who established ECMO as a clinically viable and subsequently widespread therapy.
